2008
Jan. 3 - Named the NHL's rookie of the month for December. He led all rookies with 14 points in 13 games.

Jan. 19 - Registers his first four-point game with four assists in a 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers at the Verizon Center.

Jan. 21 - Tallies four points in a 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Mellon Arena, becoming the first rookie in NHL history to register back-to-back four assist games.

March 21 - Has his first two-goal game in 5-3 win at Atlanta. His game-tying and game-winning goals come just 32-seconds a part late in the third period, and are the fastest two goals by a Capitals player all season.

April 11 - Makes his Stanley Cup playoffs debut with one assist in a 5-4 win over Philadelphia in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at the Verizon Center.

April 17 - His first Stanley Cup playoffs goal - assisted by Alexander Ovechkin and Mike Green - in the first period of Game 4 ties the game at 1-1. The Flyers eventually won, 4-3, in double overtime.

May 3 - Scores first-period goal in Sweden's 6-5 win over Belarus in a Group A preliminary game of the 2008 IIHF World Championship at Quebec City's Colisee Pepsi.

May 5 - He scores his second goal of the 2008 World Championship in Sweden's 9-0 win over France at Quebec City's Colisee Pepsi.

June 12 - Finishes second to Chicago's Patrick Kane for the Calder Trophy, given to the rookie of the year.

Nov. 15 - Has first career five-point game with a goal and four assists in the Capitals' 6-5 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.

Nov. 17 - Is named the NHL's First Star for the week following an 11-point and plus-10 performance in a four-game period.
2007
May 21 - Signs a three-year entry level contract with the Capitals. Later that day, he threw out the ceremonial first-pitch at the Washington Nationals game at RFK Stadium. It was the first baseball game he ever attended.

Oct. 5 - Makes his much-anticipated debut for the Capitals in the 2007-08 season-opener at Atlanta's Philips Arena.

Oct. 5 - Draws his first NHL point with an assist on Michael Nylander's power-play goal that gave the Caps a 1-0 lead over the Atlanta Thrashers at 10:41 of the first period.

Nov. 8 - Scores his first NHL goal against Ottawa's Ray Emery, in a 4-1 win over the Senators at Scotiabank Place. A power-play goal, he poked a loose puck past Emery on a goalmouth scramble.

Nov. 23 - Celebrates his 20th birthday with his first multiple-point game with a goal and two assists in Bruce Boudreau's coaching debut with the Capitals. His second career goal -- and first career game-winner -- at 1:55 of overtime lifts Washington to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Nov. 28 - In his first NHL shootout attempt, he scores on Florida's Tomas Vokoun, but the Capitals lose 2-1.
2006
April 6 - Makes his Swedish national team debut in an exhibition game against Norway at Jordal Amfi in Oslo.

May 20 - Named player of the game by Sweden's TV3 in 5-4 semifinal win over Canada in the 2006 IIHF World Championship played in Riga, Latvia.

June 24 - Is the first European player selected in the 44th NHL Draft held at Vancouver's General Motors Place. Picked fourth overall by the Washington Capitals

July 10 - Turns down a contract offer from the Capitals; announces he'll play at least one more season for Brynas in the Swedish Elite League.

Dec. 30 - He scores three goals in Sweden's 10-2 win over Latvia in a Group B preliminary round game of the 2006 World Junior Championships, played at Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Nov. 23 - Is born to Anders and Christine Backstrom in Gavle, a port city situated by the Baltic Sea in central Sweden.
